Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week with APS

Investing in the Next Generation of Security Professionals

At APS , part of the Obsequio Group, we are proud to support the next generation of security professionals through apprenticeships. These programs provide hands-on experience, mentorship from industry experts, and a structured pathway to a fulfilling career.

This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re shining a spotlight on two of our talented apprentices, Sophie Leggat (Apprentice Administrator) and Kyle Mckinlay (Apprentice Engineer), as they share their experiences and insights into their journey at APS Security.

Meet Sophie Leggat – Apprentice Administrator

Gaining Skills & Confidence in Administration

Sophie chose an apprenticeship in the security industry because she wanted to build her administrative skills, and APS offered the best opportunity to do so. She found the role appealing because it provided more learning and development opportunities compared to other apprenticeships.

“I was looking to gain skills in administration, and this job was the best option for me.”

A Day in the Life

Sophie’s typical day includes sorting deliveries, answering phone calls and emails, and completing her college work. She has also developed a keen interest in learning about the security equipment APS installs and how it is used.

Overcoming Challenges & Building Confidence

One of Sophie’s biggest challenges was building confidence when speaking to new people on the phone and in person. With time and practice, she has gained the ability to communicate effectively and handle customer queries independently.

“I can now confidently complete most jobs without needing to ask for help, and I can answer customer questions without always consulting my co-workers.”

Looking to the Future

While she is still exploring her long-term career goals, Sophie knows that her apprenticeship has opened doors to many opportunities. The most rewarding part of her journey has been recognising her own progress and having others notice it too.

“An apprenticeship is the best way to learn and gain work experience while earning money at the same time.”

Meet Kyle Mckinlay – Apprentice Engineer

A Passion for Security & Hands-On Learning

Kyle had previous experience in the security industry, so choosing an apprenticeship with APS was an easy decision. After discussing the company’s values and opportunities with Kev & Jenny, he knew APS was the right place for him to develop his skills.

“I liked what the company stood for and what they had to offer.”

A Dynamic & Engaging Role

Kyle’s day-to-day responsibilities include working on different job sites, installing and servicing CCTV, fire alarms, and intruder systems. He enjoys the variety and complexity of the work, especially the challenge of dealing with large-scale security systems.

Developing Key Skills & Overcoming Challenges

Through his apprenticeship, Kyle has improved his manual dexterity and confidence – essential skills for working in security engineering. One of his biggest challenges was believing in himself and overcoming the fear of making mistakes. By starting small and gradually taking on more responsibilities, he gained the confidence to tackle larger tasks.

“It’s helped me to be confident in myself and just go for it. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.”

Growing into the Role

Although he hasn’t been in his apprenticeship for long, Kyle has already started taking on jobs independently, a major step in his development. His ultimate goal? To become not just a successful engineer, but a great one.

“I want to be a good engineer, not just successful.”

Advice for Future Apprentices

Kyle encourages anyone considering an apprenticeship in security to take the leap.

“Just go for it – what have you really got to lose?”
